Elena Walch: Sustainability at the heart of innovation with the new “lightweight” bottle for the “Selezione” tier.

Elena Walch proudly announces the introduction of a new lightweight bottle for its “Selezione” tier, available starting from the 2024 vintage. A significant change for the estate, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability.

The new Burgundy bottles of the Selezione line by Elena Walch weigh only 395 grams, a reduction of 21% compared to the initial weight of 500 grams. This innovation helps reduce CO2 emissions, cutting 64 tons of CO2 annually, marking an important milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable future.

The quest for a lighter bottle stemmed from a thorough CO2 analysis carried out in 2022 by the “Ökoinstitut” (“eco-institute”) Alto Adige. The CO2 balance revealed that a significant portion of emissions came from the production and transport of bottles, the so-called Scope-3 emissions, which account for 53% of the estate’s overall emissions. This awareness prompted the company to seek concrete solutions to reduce its environmental impact, leading to the creation of lighter premium bottles for the Selezione wines.

“We chose this new bottle, weighing only 395 grams, internationally recognized as a ‘lightweight bottle.’ It is a concrete step that reflects our constant commitment to reducing our CO2 footprint, fully respecting the environment,” says Karoline Walch.

The move to a lighter bottle is just the latest in a series of actions taken by Elena Walch over the years to ensure a positive impact on the environment. The adoption of sustainable practices is a commitment that has been in place for over twenty years, including energy efficiency in the wine cellar, the use of renewable energy, and the responsible management of water and soil resources. The estate has always chosen eco-friendly materials, reducing plastic use and preferring recyclable packaging.

In addition to the new bottle, Elena Walch is also pleased to announce the restyling of the Selezione tier labels. The new labels, with a modern and elegant design, maintain the iconic elements that made them famous, such as the mountain silhouette and the golden band, while incorporating tactile embossing that makes the sensory experience unique. With this restyling, the Selezione wines gain an even more distinctive presence, while preserving their recognizable identity, ensuring they continue to achieve the success they deserve.

“We wanted to preserve the elements that make the labels of our Selezione line unique and distinctive, such as the mountains and the golden band, but reinterpret them in a more contemporary version. The golden mountains and the vineyards below will be embossed, creating a refined effect that is clearly perceptible to the touch. With this restyling, we want to give our products an even more distinctive presence, confident they will continue to achieve the success they deserve,” says Julia Walch.

In 2024, Elena Walch also obtained the “VIVA Certification” (sustainablitly certification), a program from the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security that recognizes wineries adopting eco-friendly practices, respecting the land, and contributing to the quality of Italian wine. The VIVA Certification is the result of a continuous commitment to improving sustainable practices and promoting product quality, combining respect for the environment with the enhancement of the territory.
