The Italian DOC system controlling the origin of wines imposes high standards on growers and wineries wishing to use names of origin on wine labels. In South Tyrol over 95 percent of the vineyard area is registered for the production of DOC wine, the highest in all Italy. Together with the name of individual wine-growing areas in South Tyrol, the overarching appellation ‘Südtirol’ or ‘Alto Adige’ must appear on the labels of all DOC wines with the exception of Kalterersee or Lago di Caldaro.
